Hi, I'm McKayla Benson! I am from Idaho Falls, Idaho. I am 19 years old and this is my second semester up here in Rexburg. I'm attending school at BYU-Idaho and I am studying Marriage and Family. I am the middle child of 5. I love spending time with family, and I especially love being an aunt. I hope you all enjoy my blog!

The definition of a father is the male parent of a child. Although mothers play a significant part in our lives, father’s are a big part as well. They help build a family. In a website called Fatherhood.org, I found statistic’s about how the family struggles without a father. The first one is that children living in female-headed homes with no spouse present have a poverty rate of 47.6%. The poverty rate is so high when a father is not present because usually the father is the provider and goes out to work to make money for the family. A mother can work, but she will not make as much as a father could and she still has the responsibility to take care of the children as well. Parenting Styles

There is many types of parenting I am just now coming to understand what types of parents I grew up with and I’m learning what type of parent I want to be. There are parenting styles like permissive, authoritarian, and authoritative, and uninvolved. Permissive is where parents set rules but rarely enforce them, don’t give out consequences very much, and they think your child will learn best with little interference from you. Permissive parents usually take on a more of a friend role than a parent role. They encourage their children to talk to them, but they don’t put much effort into discouraging poor or bad choices. Authoritarian is where parents think that their children should be seen and not heard. When it comes to rules, it is the parents own rules with no exception to why the children need to follow them. Effects of Divorce

Almost 50% of all marriages in the United States will end in divorce or separation. Divorce affects not only the parents, but it also affects everyone else, especially the children. I’ve watched close families get torn apart because of divorce. My aunt and uncle had been married for 25 years when they decided to get married. It affected their children big time, but it always affected other family members. It was really hard for their children to understand why they needed to get divorce but my uncle immediately moved out. The situation got bad when my uncle turned some of their own children against my aunt. He let them do whatever they wanted and it was crazy to see that as kind and fun as my cousins still were, they had changed. No one in that family is active in the church.
