Family Cultures

My family has many cultures that define us. The two that I would like to focus on has to do with potatoes and Adidas. The two things that we would like to set aside are nagging and being too worried about everything.
My family and I have always lived in Idaho. My mom grew up in Blackfoot and my grandpa was a potato farmer. They always ate potatoes with every meal. You can eat a potato in many ways so they always ate potatoes with everything.  My mom still loves potatoes and quite often in my family, we eat at least some kind of potato in our meals. Everyone in my family loves potatoes just as much as she does. They are the best in Idaho and the best variety of potato to eat is Russet Burbank’s. If they aren’t Russet Burbank’s, we always find a way to complain about how they don’t taste as good. The love of potatoes will always be in our hearts and will always be a culture in my family.
Another culture that we have in my family is that we love Adidas. My grandpa B is the one that started it all. It is pretty much a sin if you wear Nike around him or even own anything Nike. It’s like you get banished from the family and he never wants to see you again wearing anything but Adidas ever again. He especially hates Nike so anytime he sees a family member wearing anything Nike, he makes you wear a bag of shame over your head. My grandpa said that at his funeral, he wants to be buried wearing Adidas sweats, and he’s being dead serious. Anytime we get sports shoes, they have to be Adidas. We’ve learned over the years that if you are going to wear Nike anything, to not wear it around him. In my family, all we grew up with was Adidas so that’s all we wear and we don’t even dare wearing something from Nike. These are just two of the cultures that my family has.
Now that we talked about a few cultures my family has and will continue to have, let’s talk about some cultures we want to set aside that we do in my family. Nagging is a big culture we have in my family. We are always nagging in some way and we would like to change that. Nagging is just a natural thing we do every day no matter what it’s about. My parents encourage us to get things done as soon as we can and in the best way. If it isn’t done when encouraged to, we get nagged at until it’s done. It happens with homework, piano practicing, chores, and much more. I’ve learned over the years to get things done so I won’t get nagged at, but my sisters still haven’t caught up on that part yet so they are getting nagged constantly to get things done. Even us kids nag our parents to help us do something or get something done when we want it done. We hope that we can get rid of this culture soon.
Another one that we would like to set aside is to not worry so much about things. My dad is a worrier about most things. Especially money. Sometimes when someone worries about one thing, it stresses the rest of us out. We don’t go on trips very often, but when we do, it is kind of stressful. Sometimes we have the worst luck and something bad happens to us. If we all could not worry so much about things, then everyone in my family would be a lot more relaxed. As we do have a few cultural things we would like to set aside, we do have tons of cultural things we do and will continue to do them for forever.
